Belize City often an underestimated tour but its full of history and intrigue of a people determined to persevere.
Originally the entire country of Belize was occupied by the Maya people. Along the coast (Belize City) they were catching stingrays for their spines and trading it with the inland Mayas for their blood letting ceremonies.
Around the 1670's Belize became known as haven for the Buccaneers from England waiting to pounce on the unsuspecting Spaniard ship laden with gold. Although Belize Town became more valuable to the buccaneer ships as a port to re-provision their ships with turtle etc. but to England Belize became the place to find the best place to find dye for their clothes and "red gold" - Mahogany for their furniture.
Belize Town has always been the hub of activity for the country now known as Belize after winning the right from Saint George's Caye (Cayo Cocina). It was a place where Belizeans from all corners of the country would come to live, study, bank, work, pray but mostly celebrate together. Throughout the History of Belize Town, everyone survived the ups and downs of their lives but LIVED for the time when they got to celebrate Christmas (or as some Belizeans would call it, "Christmas Bram"), it would last for half of December to the beginning of January and was the birthplace of the Belizean Creole Bruk Down music. This gave Belize City the reputation that it was built on top of broken rum bottles. Belize City in more modern times, attract Belizeans home for the September Celebrations starting from before the 10th(Battle of St. George's Caye day, 10 Sept, 1798) to the 21st (Independence day 21 Sept. 1981) of September from all parts of world.
Belize City has not been dethroned and today is still the economic capital and hub of Belize even though Belmopan City was declared the new Government's Capital in 1970. Belize City still boasts the major commercial Ship's Port including Cruise, all the Banks' (including the Central Bank) head quarters, home of the two major fishing co-operatives and "Best" schools.
